The Frisco Railroad Run takes place in Williard, Missouri just outside of Springfield. The marathon course was 13.1 miles out and back along the Frisco Highline Trail. This is a trail converted from a railroad track. It was very flat. Much of the course was crushed gravel and shaded meandering through pastureland.
There were several country road crossings that were unmanned. But drivers were courteous to let the small number of runners pass by safely. There was one short section of the path that consisted of deep narrow lanes where you had to be careful to land in the path to avoid a potential ankle injury.
The aid stations were impressive. As this is primarily an ultramarathon event, the aid stations were mostly self-serve. But selection of food and drink was plentiful. To drink they offered water, Gatorade, Tailwind, and pickle juice. At one aid station, Dean asked for Tailwind. He picked up a cup the color of lemon lime Gatorade not remembering that Tailwind is clear. The taste was extreme. He spit it out and realized he had picked up the pickle juice.
The aid stations also were cheer zones. The volunteers were very encouraging the first time we passed early in the race and equally as motivating hours later when we passed again on our way to the finish.
This was a fun race. The weather was perfect. If you are looking for a low-key event in Missouri, check this one out.
